Making the Cut

In mid-2019, I was part of the production team for an episode of the popular Amazon Prime Video show "Making The Cut," which was released in early 2020. The episode, filmed in Amazon Fashion Studio in Tokyo, Japan, featured a unique blend of fashion and digital art achieved through 3D projection mapping. Presented by Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn, the show tasked designers with creating looks based on the concept of opposing forces. The specific set for this episode was a stairwell inside the studio, which served as the canvas for the projection mapping.
To bring the designers' creations to life, I worked on transforming the stairwell into a dynamic digital environment using 3D projection mapping. The sides of the stairwell were used as canvases, with stunning animations projected to create six different themes for the designers to choose from. As fashion models walked through the staircase, the projections created a breathtaking effect that enhanced the presentation of their designs. The projection content was meticulously cut according to the structure of the stairs using Touch Designer and then mapped with the help of the AV team in Japan. The final result was an immersive digital fashion experience that was broadcast first on Amazon Prime Video, followed by multiple fashion channels worldwide. The episode showcased the successful integration of fashion and digital art, highlighting the potential of projection mapping in creating engaging visual experiences.
