The Lost Chambers Entrance Feature

Brief

A series of interactive projections was developed for The Lost Chambers, a mythological aquarium located in Atlantis the Palm, Dubai. The project involved creating a projected coral reef at the entrance, with an interactive swarm of fish circling the cylindrical aquarium in the room. The installation is now a permanent feature at The Lost Chambers. The project began with a proof of concept that included a projection of a swimming jellyfish, which reacted to the presence of people. The ultimate goal was to create an immersive experience where the projection felt like an extension of the aquarium itself, much like you're floating atop the aquarium.

Solution

The technical execution of the project presented challenges due to the circular architecture of the entrance room, which required the projection to be circular with a hole masked in the center around the cylindrical aquarium. To achieve the desired high-quality projection, six Epson projectors were used, along with a meticulous process of mapping, masking, and blending. Radar touch sensors were implemented along the circumference of the circular floor to make the projection interactive. The sensors' positioning initially posed a risk of tripping hazards, but this was resolved by creating intrusions in the wall to house the sensors safely. As a result, visitors to The Lost Chambers can now interact with a school of fish that playfully respond as they walk around the central water tank.
